CONVERSION OF A LARGE BUILDING IN PLYMOUTH

About This Project

A large building for commercial and manufacturing purpose, is converted in housing complex, facing the high density problem in buildings of this size. The design challenge is oriented to define privatized units, including amenities and adequate communal spaces, in order to avoid the sense of ‘honeycomb’ structure. Exterior aspect mixes preexisting features of  the brick walls with the new metal cladding of the raising, that creates a stratified aspect that overcomes repetitiveness. Construction is mainly oriented inwards at the center of the site, with just two short facades on the street; this fact implies to outline inner courtyards to provide a correct supply of natural lighting and adequate distance between living spaces.
